Alginate is known polymer that is extracted from the cell walls of brown algae and it is a biopolymer. Its three subcomponents are mannuronic acids and guluronic acids; when mixed with water, it has the consistency of gelatin. The biodegradation of alginate is due to its non toxicity, biocompatibility and ability to form hydrogels and hence it applied in various fields for example in the food industry, in pharmaceuticals and in biomedical engineering. In the biomedical field, it has wide use especially for wound healing, drug delivery and implantation of tissue engineering scaffold.
