Industrial Sugar Market

Market Dynamics And Factors For Industrial Sugar Market

Drivers:

Growing Consumption of Processed Food and Beverages

Nowadays, people are experimenting with their food, and most of the population eats processed food items once a day due to many reasons like working load, and having less time, as a result, people are highly consuming processed food and beverages. Also, manufacturers or producers are offering various cuisines or food products around the world that are attracting consumers and also shifting their food preferences. Additionally, processed food and beverages are highly palatable, convenient, shelf-stable, and affordable, and are way more appealing to children as well as adults. For instance, the United States consumes approximately 2.21 million tons of sugar, or 14.4 pounds of sugar per capita only from Coke per year. The high consumption of industrial sugar during the production process of a variety of food items and the wide application range in the food & beverage industry to meet rising consumer requirements majorly contribute to the growth of the industrial sugar market during the projected period.

Restraints:

The Prevalence of Chronic Diseases

The prevalence of multiple chronic conditions is restraining the growth of the industrial sugar market. Chronic diseases are among the most prevalent health condition in the world. According to Statista, in 2021, around 15% of adults in the United States reported having at least two chronic medical conditions, while only around 11% of older millennials reported the same. According to National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), chronic diseases such as diabetes are the leading causes of increasing heart-related disorders like cancer. To control these diseases doctors are remanding nutrients rich food with no or low added sugar due to which the old age population highly reduces the consumption of packaged and high sugar-containing food items which hamper the growth of the market.

Opportunity:

High Adoption of Brown and Organic Sugar

Increasing adoption of brown sugar and organic sugar due to their high nutritional value is providing a lucrative opportunity for the growth of the market. The molasses in brown sugar makes it a source of certain minerals like calcium; potassium, iron, and magnesium due to this people prefer these sugars. Moreover, increasing health consciousness, the prevalence of chronic diseases, and trends in eating dietary food products are triggering the demand for brown and organic sugar. People prefer brown sugar over white sugar since white sugar contains no minerals and also risks having sulphur, which is harmful to the human body but it is used during the refining process. People are more concerned about their diet and eating habits, they prefer this type of sugar in their day-to-day life to maintain their health. Many food processing industries are using this type of sugar to make dense cakes, cookie dough, and barbecue sauces considering the increasing demand from urban areas. Moreover, people suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure are including organic or brown sugar in their food owing to their nutritious properties. Along with this, the increasing availability of a variety of products containing brown and organic sugar responsible for the high adoption of brown and organic sugar, further that provides a lucrative growth opportunity for the growth of the market.

Challenges:

High Government Regulations on Commodity

The stringent government regulations and high-quality standardization limit the growth of the industrial sugar market. For instance, Governing body regarding food safety and standards in India has standardized rules and regulations on every type of sugar. White crystalline sugar obtained by refining plantation white sugar has to be free from dirt, filth, iron fillings, and added colorings matter. The extraneous matter shall not exceed 0.1% by weight. The Moisture in the sugar is not more than 0.5% by weight, and Sucrose is not less than 99.5% by weight. In addition to this, it only may contain food additives permitted in FSSR. Also, there are standardized rules and regulations on the import and export of commodities depending on the country. However, industrial sugar manufacturers can overcome this challenge by maintaining all the standardized processes and government regulations on the production and sailing of the commodity.

Segmentation Analysis Of Industrial Sugar Market

By Type, the White sugar segment is estimated to dominate the Industrial Sugar market and continue the dominance over the projected period owing to the high demand for the product from the different manufacturing industries. White sugar is made from sugar cane, it is the most common type of industrial sugar which is used across the globe. White sugar is mainly used in drinks or baking by most manufacturers to prepare delicate desserts such as mousse or puddings, also it is used in sweets, icing, whipping cream, and powdered drinks. The high consumption of sugar owing to the growing demand for confectionery food products, and soft drinks are driving the growth of the market. The region includes countries like India, china, and japan which contain a huge population that helps to raise the consumption of industrial sugar in the region. According to Statista, For 2021/2022, India had the highest sugar consumption across the world amounting to approximately 29 million metric tons. Though China has a larger population than India, India consumed nearly 12 million metric tons more sugar than China. Global sugar consumption exceeded 175 million metric tons in the same period. Moreover, Sugar is extracted from two crops sugar cane and sugar beet, high production of sugar cane in the region is propelling the growth of the market. According to Statista, some two billion metric tons of sugar cane were produced worldwide in 2020, and Asia was the largest sugar-producing region in the world. India, China, Thailand, and Pakistan rounded off the five leading sugar cane-producing countries. The high consumption of sugar-containing food products and high production of sugar cane is contributing to the growth of the industrial sugar market in the region.

South America is projected to grow rapidly in the upcoming years owing to the high production of sugar cane in the country such as Brazil. Sugar cane is used in the production of industrial sugar and Brazil is the largest producer of sugar cane. In 2020 this country produces more than 757 million metric tons of sugar cane alone. In this same year, Brazil was the leading global sugar producer nearly 30 million metric tons of processed sugar are produced in the country. Additionally, According to Statista, in 2021/2022 Brazil has the highest export volume of sugar in comparison with any other country, approximately 25.65 million metric tons. Thailand grab the second position in sugar export, but had significantly less export volume compared to Brazil, at about 10 million metric tons of sugar in the same year. The high production and export of sugar cane and sugar are supporting the growth of the industrial sugar market in this region. Moreover, other countries in the region like Colombia, Argentina, and chilli are witnessing high sugar demand owing to the increasing food processing industry is also propels the growth of the market.

North America and Europe are projected to grow rapidly in the upcoming years owing to the high demand for brown and organic sugar. The growing health-related concerns and increasing awareness about choric diseases, and diet, are responsible to trigger the consumption of brown and organic sugar. Moreover, the high presence of processed food producers and beverage companies in the region drives market growth. In 2020, Coca-Cola was ranked as the leading carbonated soft drink (CSD) company in the US with a volume share of 44.9%. PepsiCo ranked second and garnered a volume share of 25.9% in the same year. This company uses tons of sugar to prepare various beverages. Additionally, thousands of different food manufacturing companies are establishments in the US every year, only California includes 3,768 food manufacturers in 2020. The high consumption of sugar by the food and beverage sector may propel the growth of the market in North America and Europe.

Covid-19 Impact Analysis On Industrial Sugar Market

The COVID-19 arrival had a severe impact on the functioning of the global food industries and companies. With the temporary shutdown of several manufacturing facilities, there is weakened consumer demand for most of the market products and services. The global pandemic COVID-19 has harmed the global supply of sugar. The pandemic is causing disruption in the distribution channel system in the countries such as India, Indonesia, and Brazil, which are some of the largest raw cane sugar producers. The average price of sugar cane and industrial sugar in high during the pandemic compared to the average price before the pandemic. The main reason behind the rising prices of a commodity is labor shortages and government restrictions over transportation and logistics which highly disturb the supply chain. Industrial sugar sales through food service had been partially offset by growth in retail sales.
